Spoon Theory

What is Spoon Theory?

I'll  give you the quick "Wikipedia" version to give you a basic understanding of what Spoon Theory is and what a "Spoonie" is.

The Spoon Theory is a metaphor that is utilised by people with disabilities/chronic illnesses to explain the amount of actual energy they have available for their daily activities. A Spoon, therefore, is an appreciatable unit of measurement to track how much energy one has to do their daily tasks. Each activity that one does in the day is measured in spoons - for example, one day it may take you two spoons to get dressed while others take only half a spoon. When a Spoonie runs out of spoons, they are forced to rest until the spoons have replenished and they have the energy to do activities again.

Spoon Theory is a way of explaining how much effort it may take someone with disabilities or a chronic illness compared to those who do not. A Spoonie must conserve their energy, or spoons, in order to not run out while doing mundane household tasks or just bathing or getting dressed. Healthy people have no need to conserve their energy as they don't run out of spoons.

The term was initially brought about by Christine Miserandino in 2003 in her essay "The Spoon Theory" which was for her website, ButYouDon'tLookSick.com, which is something that is often said to those living with chronic illnesses.
